Presence of two new pests in the Western Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, with data on others (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae)

The "banana weevil" Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) is found for the first time in peninsular Spain, attacking Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman, being new for Europe. The "northern hunting billbug" Sphenophorus venatus venatus (Say, 1831) is recorded for the first time from the Canary Islands based on specimens from Tenerife Island attacking turf grass. The "hunting billbug" or "zoysia billbug" Sphenophorus venatus vestitus Chittenden, 1904 is confirmed for Morocco and peninsular Spain, and the "four-spotted coconut weevil" Diocalandra frumenti (Fabricius, 1801) is confirmed for the Canary Islands. The problems of relaxing quarantine controls and the danger posed by the spread of these pests are briefly commented upon. A key for the separation of the two subspecies of S. venatus and another for the genera of Dryophthoridae of the Ibero-Balearic and Macaronesian areas are included.
