Abstract:

A brief introduction to the superfamily Curculionoidea is given with special reference to those of the Japanese fauna. The general morphology, terminology, phylogeny and the higher classification on the family level are discussed and a key to the world families is provided. Scolytidae, Platypodidae and Dryophthoridae are recognized as independent families upon the morphological data. The temporary keys to the subfamilies of Curculionidae and to the tribes of Entiminae occurring in Japan are given. The first part of the monograph on the family Curculionidae of Japan treats the tribes Phyllobiini, Polydrusini and Cyphicerini of the subfamily Entiminae, including the keys to genera, subgenera and species, descriptions, distributions, biodata, illustrations of important features, and photographs of all species in color. New genera, new species and new combinations are as enumerated in the Contents including 9 new genera, 2 new subgenera, 22 new species and 13 new combinations out of 28 genera and 84 species in total. New synonymies are as follows: Tribe Phyllobiini Phyllobius (Diallobius) incomptus (Sharp, 1896) = Phyllobius niundus Sharp, 1896 (Diallobius) Tribe Cyphicerini Eumyllocerus maligmss (Faust, 1887) (Myllocerus) = Eumyllocerus. filicornis (Reitter, 1915) (Myllocerops) Lepidepistomus, fumosus (Faust, 1882) (Myllocerus) =Myllocerus nipponensis Zumpt, 1938 =Myllocerus otsukai Kono, 1930 Phyllolytus Fairmaire, 1889 = Myllocerops Reitter, 1906 Phyllolytus psittacinus (Redtenbacher, 1869) (Myllocerus) = Cyrtepistomus costatipennis Morimoto, 1965 Phyllolytus variabilis (Roelofs, 1873) (Myllocerus) = Phyllolytus longicornis Fairmaire, 1889 Cyrtepistomus castaneus (Roelofs, 1873) (Myllocerus) = Macrocorynus capito (Faust, 1887) (Myllocerus) = Macrocorynus chlorizans (Faust, 1887) (Myllocerus) = Macrocorynus, fortis (Reitter, 1915) (Myllocerops) Phytoscaphus Schoenherr, 1826 = Pseudophytoscaphus Pajni, 1990 Phytoscaphus ciliatus Roelofs, 1873 = Phytoscaphus leporinus Faust, 1892 = Phytoscaphus formosanus Matsumura, 1910 = Phytoscaphus dentirostris Voss, 1958.
