Abstract

In recent years the cultivation of ornamental palms
(Arecaceae) has increased markedly in northern Queensland.
Consequently, several insects have become important pests, particularly
Rhabdoscelus obscurus (Boisduval), the cane weevil borer. The larvae of
this beetle feed on various species of palms, making the plants
unsaleable. Death or lodging of the trees may also result. This paper
documents its pest status, derived from information in the literature
and from consultation with lcoal growers.
