TY - JOUR T1 - Weevils of the tribe Acalyptini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Curculioninae): Redefinition and a taxonomic treatment of the Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese species JF - Esakia Y1 - 2005 A1 - Kojima, Hiroaki A1 - Morimoto, Katsura SP - 69 EP - 115 KW - Acalyptini KW - Acalyptus KW - Amorphoidea KW - Amorphoidea gossyppi KW - Amorphoidea lata KW - Curculioninae KW - Derelomini KW - Derelomorphus KW - Eudela KW - Eudelodes KW - Imera KW - Imera formosana KW - Meredolus KW - Nodocnemus KW - Orsophagus KW - Orsophagus subfasciatus KW - Parimera KW - Parimera flava KW - Parimera subflava KW - Tithene AB - The tribe Acalyptini is redefined, distinguished from the tribe Derelomini and placed in the subfamily Curculioninae. Most genera classified in Derelomini from Asia are transferred to Acalyptini: Derelomorphus Marshall, Eudela Pascoe, Eudelodes Zimmerman, Meredolus Marshall, Nodocnemus Marshall and Tithene Pascoe. Thus, at least in the Malesia (Malay Peninsula to New Guinea), Pacific islands and also Australia, weevils associated with the flowers of palms belong not to Derelomini but to Acalyptini except for introduced species. The genera Orsophagus Roelofs and Imera Pascoe, which were synonymized with Acalyptus Schoenherr and Amorphoidea Motschulsky, respectively, are resurrected to the status of full genera. All the genera classified in Acalyptini are briefly reviewed and a key to them is provided. Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese species are treated taxonomically, and a total of 5 genera and 7 species are recognized including the following new species: Orsophagus subfasciatus (Japan, Taiwan and Thailand), Parimera flava (Japan), P. subflava (Taiwan) and Imera formosana (Taiwan). Amorphoidea gossyppi (Pierce) known from the Philippines is synonymous with A. lata, one of the famous pests of cotton in the Philippines. The genera Imera and Parimera are recorded in this area for the first time. The tribe Anoplini is placed in the subfamily Curculioninae sensu lato. In addition to the three previously known Japanese species, 12 new species are described from various areas of East Asia as follows: S. crypticus [Japan], S. nepalensis [Nepal], S. ovalis [Japan, Taiwan], S. ovaloides [Malaysia], S. rhombiformis [Thailand], S. uniformis [Malaysia], S. malayanus [Malaysia], S. javanus [Indonesia], S. formosanus [Taiwan], S. lychoui [Taiwan], S. maculipennis [Taiwan] and S. hiratatei [Malaysia]. A key to species is provided, together with habitus photographs, maps, and figures of the male and female terminalia. Occurrence of this genus is recorded, for the first time, from both the areas. Ouzephianta Voss is newly synonymized with Imathia and the type species, O. sparsa from Java, is transferred to the genus. Imathia is placed in Curculioninae: Storeini, following Zimmerman. Sixteen new records and 5-9 new species are reported, yielding a total of 28 species of Curculionoidea for the island. The distribution and natural history of each species are briefly reviewed. As many as nine species are endemics, whereas 15 species are shared with Puerto Rico which was the primary source region for Pliocene-Pleistocene colonization events. Mona Island's weevil fauna is depauperate and dominated by members of the Cossoninae, Anthonomini, Tychiini, Entiminae, and Scolytinae. The apparent underrepresentation of common Caribbean weevil lineages such as the Cryptorhynchinae suggests that subaerial land bridges during the Oligocene-Miocene period were important in facilitating their colonization of the main island of Puerto Rico.
